Boyle Heights Residence

In the historic neighborhood of Boyle Heights, this small ADU is a result of many conversations with the homeowner who is intending to add on to his current family home. Priced out and in a bind, the client is in a position to upgrade his family's home built in 1906 that he grew up in, but unable to purchase his own. With home prices escalating out of reach for not only the client but many people who currently live in Southern California, this project attempts to provide a viable option for this housing crisis.

This design prototype creates a separate unit behind the existing 2bd/1ba 1,000sqft craftsman style home. By repurposing an existing 300 sqft legal storage building in the rear of the property, built approximately 100 years ago, the design was able to achieve an additional 450 sqft for a 2 story living space and roof deck, while addressing concerns of costs and sustainability.

About The Structure

Environmental considerations were incorporated into the design by doubling the required number of solar panels to power the house, thereby offsetting its carbon footprint and reducing utility costs. Additionally, water catchment systems were installed to collect and store rainwater for irrigation. The landscaping features drought-tolerant plants, and the structure was built around a 25-year-old palm tree cherished by the client, ensuring its preservation.
